What Buyers Research Before Ordering Designer Furniture

Buyer research tends to follow the same path: identify the design direction, compare the cost of an original against a custom equivalent, confirm materials and construction, and then check lead time and export terms. This section summarises what each step actually requires in practice.

The most useful preparation is a specification — dimensions, materials, finishes and quantities — because it converts a comparison of images into a comparison of offers.

Original, Vintage and Custom: The Real Trade-offs

Original: authentic provenance, defined quality, but long lead times, high cost and often fixed dimensions. Vintage: character and availability, but uncertain condition, restoration cost and limited quantity. Custom: dimensions matched to the site and a controlled finish, in exchange for design and sampling time.

For project work, the practical split is usually to import standard items where scale is available and custom-manufacture the pieces that define the space.

Materials and Construction Questions to Ask

Ask what the frame is made of and how it is joined, what the seat suspension is, the foam density of each layer, whether the cover is removable, and what the hardware specification is. For surfaces, ask for the veneer cut, the gloss level and the edge treatment.

A supplier who can answer these questions in writing is a lower risk than one who answers with a photograph.

Lead Time, Sampling and Approval

Sampling is normally charged and often partly credited against the production order. Approve finishes first, then a physical sample of the item, then production.

Lead time should be read as a sequence of stages — drawing approval, material confirmation, sampling, production, inspection, packing and shipping — because each stage gates the next.

Packing, Shipping and Inspection

Export furniture is inspected at incoming material, in-process and pre-shipment stages, and packed with foam, edge protection and cartons or crates by fragility. Labels matched to the packing list simplify distribution on site.

Where a project requires third-party inspection, agree its scope in writing so that the report covers the items that actually matter.
