How to Read a Custom Furniture Quotation

A custom furniture quotation is only comparable when it is broken into components. Ask for the price to be split into carcass, surface, upholstery, hardware, finishing and packing, with the sampling and tooling charges shown separately.

When two offers differ substantially on the same drawing, the difference is almost always in one of those lines — usually hardware specification, foam density or finishing method — and a component-level quote makes that visible.

Specification Terms That Change the Price

Veneer cut: plain-sliced against book-matched, which materially changes material yield. Gloss level: high-gloss finishes require more surface preparation than matte. Metal finish: solid brass against brass-plated steel. Foam density: a higher-density core costs more but holds shape longer. Cover construction: fixed against removable covers with zips and liners.

Each of these is a legitimate cost driver when it is stated, and a hidden compromise when it is not.

Drawings, Shop Drawings and Approval

Concept drawings describe intent; shop drawings describe manufacture. Production should not begin from a concept drawing, because dimensions, joinery and interfaces are only resolved at the shop-drawing stage.

Approve in sequence — finishes first, then a physical sample, then production — and keep a submittal log recording the revision number and approval date for every item.

Quality Control and Inspection

Inspection should occur at incoming material, in-process and pre-shipment stages. Agree the checklist in advance: dimensional tolerances, finish consistency against the approved sample, hardware function, and packing condition.

For projects with an owner's representative, third-party inspection can be arranged and its scope agreed in writing, including whether the inspection is visual, dimensional or both.

Packing, Shipping and Site Delivery

Export packing protects furniture through container loading, sea transit and site handling. Typical protection combines foam and wrapping at contact points, corner guards, and cartons or crates by fragility; large stone or glass tops are usually crated.

Labels matched to the packing list allow a container to be distributed directly to floors, rooms or zones, reducing double handling and transit damage.
