A factory visit answers questions that a catalogue cannot. Verify five things in order: the woodworking section and its joinery capability, the upholstery section and its frame and foam handling, the finishing section and whether it can produce the specified gloss level consistently, the quality-control station with its inspection records, and the packing area.
If a visit is not possible, ask for a short video walkthrough of the same five areas, plus photographs of the frame stage and the finishing stage of a current order.
Joinery: ask which joints the factory uses for structural connections, and whether curved or angled members are laminated or cut. Finishing: ask how panels from different sheets are matched, and how the gloss level is controlled across a large surface. Upholstery: ask how frames are dried, how foam densities are verified, and whether covers are cut from a single dye lot.
Each answer should come with a physical or photographic example. A capability claim without an example is a claim, not evidence.
Useful QC is recorded at three points: incoming material inspection, in-process inspection at the frame and finishing stages, and pre-shipment inspection against the approved sample and packing list. Ask to see a completed inspection record from a past order, with the item, the checkpoint and the result.
Where third-party inspection is required, agree the scope in advance — dimensional check, finish check, functionality check, and packing check are separate line items, and a vague instruction usually produces a vague report.
Confirm where the principal materials come from — timber, veneer, leather, stone and metal — and whether substitutes are permitted. Substitution without notice is the most common source of a finish mismatch between the sample and the delivered goods.
For natural materials, agree in advance the acceptable variation range so that normal grain and tone variation is not treated as a defect.
Ordering normally runs through drawing review, material confirmation, sampling or mock-up, production, inspection, packing and shipping. Sampling is typically charged and partly credited against the production order.
Lead time is confirmed after drawings and materials are approved and depends on quantity, finish complexity and material availability. Request a milestone schedule rather than a single figure, so that each stage can be tracked.
Packing for export combines foam protection, corner guards and either cartons or timber crates depending on fragility and shipping mode. Item labels should match the packing list so that a container can be distributed directly to rooms or zones.
Documentation normally includes the packing list, item labels and agreed inspection records, prepared to the market and standards specified by the client.
